Link User Home Folders to a Seperate Drive

PostPosted by natemaia » Sun Jun 11, 2017 9:36 am

We can store our user default home folders on a seperate drive and link them, this will help minimize excessive writing to our precious SSDs with the ~/Downloads, Music, Videos, etc.
8-) So how do we do it?
First we need to remove the existing folder, then create a folder on the drive we want, lastly create a symlink with the command below

The command
Code: Select all
ln -s </absolute/path/to/existing/folder> </absolute/path/to/desired/location>

In my case I had already copied ~/Downloads to the drive in question then ran
ln -s /media/smoke/Storage/Downloads /home/smoke/Downloads

Very handy, helps if your music is on an external drive and you use MPD.

Very good point, indeed.

I have the second drive mounted as /home during install. Nonetheless this approach would let me handle the virtual-machines back on the SSD ... symlinking /home/volker/virtualdrives to another partition on the SSD

Regards,
Volker
