(included) obmenu, obmenu3, or kickshaw

PostPosted by natemaia » Mon May 01, 2017 12:17 pm

Possible switch to obmenu3 it has a nicer GUI and more functionality with no extra dependancies, i have been using it with no issues. for whatever reason obmenu doesnt let me edit the commands in the stock menu and i had to do it via the .xml.
Opinions? try it out and see :)

This sounds like its more of an issue only im having, so ill close this thread. I mostly just edit the schema for obmenu generator when i need a change, but its super handy having a gui to make minor changes.. just have a look at this

Check out kickshaw http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/obladi/

I recently found it on the openbox website http://openbox.org/wiki/Openbox:Community_portal I have been using it for the last week or so and its really good(the best IMO). Installation is easy just cd into the extracted kickshaw_version_here_source/source/ and run
Code: Select all
sudo make
&
sudo make install

GTK 3 is required but thats not an issue on ArchLabs
Out of all the options we have for editing our menu this is by far my favourite, its theme matches flawlessly with other applications, the interface is easy to use and right clicking gives all the options anyone could need. The only real downside is that there isnt a repo for it, but running a quick install manually isnt a deal breaker.... for me at least :geek:

Caveats:

#1 I had to make a dektop file in /usr/share/applications/ named kickshaw.desktop to get search programs like kupfer to launch it correctly (without a terminal tagged onto it much like obmenu)
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Exec=kickshaw
Icon=obconf
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Name=Kickshaw
Comment=Edit the OpenBox menu

#2 I had to go to /usr/local/bin/ and make kickshaw executable
Code: Select all
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/kickshaw

#3 If your menu uses depreciated execute options it will change them to command options.. Overall the way it handles the menu is different I always make a backup before i try something new or else :o

The menu functions perfectly as you'd expect and the end result is nice

I think ArchLabs is amazing the way it is and whichever you guys decide on will be awsome, going with one application over another is usually a user preference anyway.
When I find something cool that works well for me it's nice to have somewhere to tell people with similar preferences and opinions.

Awsome :)

While I've got your attention check this out
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Improving_performance#Watchdogs

I was getting messages at boot and shutdown about watchdog stopped, started, etc (only on UEFI machine though)
After some digging i have solved my problem atleast with solution found in the link above ^^^ and here
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_modules#Blacklisting

Now I have no messages at boot/reboot, I know this is not specific to archlabs it's the same in many other arch installations/distros i have tried so I was just glad to get it solved :D

Perhaps I should post this elsewhere in its own topic ? If others have a similar situation

My suggestion is to learn how to edit the menu.xml before relying on a GUI. Any mistakes and you are stuffed if you don't know how to use that file in Geany.

Very true this is good advice, I am getting better at it but still have issues from time to time. I'm learning things every day and having alot of fun with it.
